This tropical island offers a mix of ancient heritage, scenic train rides, diverse wildlife and pristine coastline. From the iconic Sigiriya Rock to the serene beaches of Mirissa, a well-structured itinerary ensures you don’t miss the best experiences.
Day 1 — Arrival and Negombo
On arrival at Colombo International Airport you are met by your guide, who assists with luggage and transfers you to your hotel in Negombo — a coastal city known for its beaches and vibrant atmosphere. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, enjoying the golden sands and calm waves.
Day 2 — Pinnawala and a Minneriya safari
En route to Dambulla, visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, home to over 80 elephants including babies and rescued animals. Witness their daily routine — feeding, playing, and the famous river bath.
In the afternoon, set out for a jeep safari at Minneriya National Park, renowned for large herds of wild elephants, often numbering in the hundreds during the Gathering season. Keep an eye out for buffalo, deer and the park’s many bird species.
Day 3 — Anuradhapura and Sigiriya
A day of cultural exploration through two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first capital, and the Sigiriya rock fortress.
Structuring the rest
From the Cultural Triangle, most itineraries move south-west into Kandy, then up into the tea country at Nuwara Eliya and Ella, down to a national park such as Yala or Udawalawe, and finally to the coast. Two weeks lets you do all of it unhurried; ten days requires choosing between the hill country and the north.
