Established in 1997, Minneriya National Park is built around the ancient Minneriya Tank, a reservoir constructed by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. This man-made wonder supports a thriving ecosystem, making Minneriya one of Sri Lanka’s most important wildlife conservation areas.

Minneriya is home to a diverse range of wildlife, with elephants the most famous inhabitants. The park also shelters leopards, sloth bears and over 160 species of birds, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.

The highlight of Minneriya is the Elephant Gathering, the largest congregation of Asian elephants in the world. Between July and September, herds migrate to the reservoir, creating a breathtaking spectacle as they bathe, graze and socialise on the open plains.
